FORM & MATERIAL EXPLORATION

Brown Paper Couture — recreate a Haute Couture dress using [brown] paper and similarly humble materials.

The Haute couture dress I chose to recreate is from Elie Saab's Spring/Summer 2017 collection. Constructed in three wearable pieces, it is made primarily out of brown tissue paper, texturized, spray-painted gold to mimic the satin sheen, and layered on a base of 40lb paper. I crafted the jewelled belt pieces with a carefully arranged combination of acetate, hot glue, glitter, broken car window glass, and — inspired by the snowy sidewalks — a collection of hand-picked crystalline road salt. The dresses were displayed at Oakridge Centre in April of 2019.
